SHELBY SUPER SENIOR AWARD

Do you know a super senior? Someone who is at least 60 years old who has made a exceptional contribution to family, our community or an organization?

If so, nominate them to be a "Super Senior".

The Super Senior Award recognizes extraordinary accomplishments in areas of family, leadership and guidance, volunteer services, fundraising and development, community involvement or any other aspect of life.

Anyone can submit a nomination that includes a written essay about what makes this senior "super". Members of the Shelby County Council on Aging will review the applications and one Super Senior

of the Year honor will be awarded during the Senior Health Fair in April.

Every nominee will receive special recognition during a spring reception in The Horizon Center. A date will be announced later, and a letter will be mailed to all nominees notifying them of their nomination.

The Super Senior of the Year will be invited to participate in events in Shelby County scheduled for the month of May, which is recognized as Older Americans Month. Shelby County’s Super Senior will advance to the Golden Hoosier Awards competition, sponsored by Lt. Governor Becky Skillman.

Send letters of nomination before March 12 with the name, address, city, state, and phone number of nominee, along with the name, address and phone number of the person submitting the nomination to:

MEMBER SPOTLIGHTAT

Nora Benefiel comes to the Horizon Center two to three days a week to spend time with friends and to oftentimes learn something new. It’s been part of her daily routine for many, many years and she sees no need to change it.

"I really enjoy coming down to the Center," the 77-year-old Shelbyville resident said. "I never even thought about coming down here until my sister-in-law (Lois Scroggham) invited me." Benefiel routinely plays Euchre, hand and foot, and bingo, and just enjoys the companionship with everyone who visits The Horizon Center. She also volunteers during the annual Strawberry Festival.

She comes regularly to the center on Monday evenings, too. "It’s nice. It gives you something to do that’s different from the activities in the day time," she said. "A different group of people come than during the days. And, I love the trips, especially when we go shopping at the Mall."

A 1950 graduate of Waldron High School, Benefiel is also a seamstress. She and her late husband, George, for years owned and operated the Singer store in town. He and her brother-in-law, John Hite, also operated the Yellow Cab station for years.

She likes spending time with her family that includes five grown children, all of whom live in Shelby County (Karen Miller, Brenda Wilson, Kevin Jim and David Benefiel), 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Donate Unused, Workable Cell Phones

A coalition of Law Enforcement Agencies and Non-Profits across the United States, recently came together to collect and redistribute used cell phones to any community member who needs a 911 phone in the event of an emergency. Secure the Call Foundation, a non-profit organization, leads this coalition.

Shelby Senior Services, Inc. is a collection site for these phones. Just bring them by the agency office, 1504 S. Harrison St., and when several have been collected, the agency will send the phones to Secure the Call Foundation.

Once received, the foundation members take the phones, inspect them, cleans then, charges their batteries and then reprograms them to be used as free 911 emergency phones. According to T. Michael Morgan, executive director of the foundation, any phone that can be turned on can access 911 services even without a carrier service plan. The phones are then distributed to domestic violence shelters, senior centers, neighborhood watch groups, school crossing guards and other agencies with an immediate need for 911 access. This service is available to individuals and organizations nationwide.

For more information on the program or to download a tax receipt for your donation, please visit the website at www.donatemycellphone.org or call 1-888-883-6628.

Please send only cell phones and batteries; no chargers.
