A BIT OF HISTORY TRIVIA
In George Washington's days, there were no cameras.
One's image was either sculpted or painted. Some
paintings of George Washington showed him standing
behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others
showed both legs and both arms. Prices charged by
painters were not based on how many people were to be
painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted. Arms
and legs are 'limbs,' therefore painting them would cost
the buyer more. Hence the expression, 'Okay, but it'll
cost you an arm and a leg.' (Artists know hands and arms
are more difficult to paint)

ShelbyGo public
transportation recently welcomed Tammy Palmer, John
Forthofer, and Dara Hebbe to the Shelby
Senior Services, Inc. staff as part-time
drivers.
Tammy Palmer has been
a resident of Shelby County for more than 16 years,
living in the Morristown area. “I thoroughly enjoy my
job as a driver for Shelby Senior Services/ShelbyGo and
look forward to seeing who will be riding with me each
day!”
John Forthofer moved to
Shelby County from New Whiteland in 1994. He and his
wife Beth, who is a teacher at Hendricks Elementary
School, have two children, Ellen and Michael, who attend
Waldron schools. “I feel very fortunate and grateful to
be a part of Shelby Senior Services.”
Dara
Hebbe,
a
lifelong Shelbyville resident, and her husband Gregg
have three children — Ben and Lucas, 19, and Jenna, 17.
She was a travel agent before the birth of her
children, was a stay-at-home mom and cared for her
grandmother before she died at age 99. “After 18 years,
I wanted to return to the workforce, but on a part-time
basis. I went into this job with the attitude to treat
others as I would like to be treated,” she said. “I
enjoy helping others.”

Donate Unused, Workable Cell Phones
A coalition of Law
Enforcement Agencies and Non-Profits across the United
States, recently came together to collect and
redistribute used cell phones to any community member
who needs a 911 phone in the event of an emergency.
Secure the Call Foundation, a non-profit organization,
leads this coalition.
Shelby
Senior Services, Inc. is a collection site for these
phones. Just bring them by the agency office, 1504 S.
Harrison St., and when several have been collected, the
agency will send the phones to Secure the Call
Foundation.
Once
received, the foundation members take the phones,
inspect them, cleans then, charges their batteries and
then reprograms them to be used as free 911 emergency
phones. According to T. Michael Morgan, executive
director of the foundation, any phone that can be turned
on can access 911 services even without a carrier
service plan. The phones are then distributed to
domestic violence shelters, senior centers, neighborhood
watch groups, school crossing guards and other agencies
with an immediate need for 911 access. This service is
available to individuals and organizations nationwide.
For more
information on the program or to download a tax receipt
for your donation, please visit the
website at www.donatemycellphone.org or call
1-888-883-6628.
Please
send only cell phones and batteries; no chargers.
