Monday, July 5 ~ Agency Offices and The Horizon Center Closed in observance of Independence Day. No ShelbyGo transportation. On the Horizon By Carol McDaniel, Membership Coordinator
The Strawberry Festival was a success in spite of the heat and pop-up showers! I was proud of the many members who pitched in to help us by donating cakes, cutting strawberries, and helping that day. I didn’t realize that many of you volunteer year after year! Also, it doesn’t do any good to have a Festival without people to attend, so we appreciated the good turnout, too! Although I attended last year’s Festival, this was my first time to be fully involved with the whole event. I was amazed at the number of hours that went into organizing and executing this important fundraiser Thank you to all who participated! The Membership Renewal Drive is well underway. More than half of our charter members have already renewed! Don’t put off sending in your renewal, because you don’t want to miss the great things we are planning. The first special event JUST FOR MEMBERS will be held Friday, July 23. Instead of a noon luncheon, this year we are planning to go to a live, audience participation murder mystery and dinner on Friday, July 23, at the Kopper Kettle Inn in Morristown. We should be at the restaurant by 5:45 p.m. for the dinner, then stay for the mystery, which begins at 7 p.m. The cost of the dinner and play is $20, paid at the restaurant. You may choose to drive and meet us there, or you may ride the ShelbyGo van. If you wish to ride the van, we will leave The Horizon Center at 5:15, and the cost is $10, paid with reservation. In order to be counted with our Members Only group, you must make a reservation by calling The Horizon Center, 398-0127, by July 21. If you have not attended one of these mysteries, you are in for a treat! Plot Summary of the Murder Mystery: Roy "Takeover" Tackett has "crashed" the company party and announced his plans to take over the company. He’s accompanied by his young bride, Bobbie, who will be upset to find her former lover and ice dancing partner, Robbie, is among the guests. Other guests include the ex-wife, the inebriated Mrs. Monroe and Skippy, The "home office" has sent its best troubleshooter, Marshall Monroe, in an attempt to head off disaster, but to no avail. When someone is murdered, they all become suspects. Luckily, Det. Nick Hardy is on the scene. It is performed by Between the Lines, a community of actors led by Mark Steenbarger. Cast of Characters Mark Steenbarger = Roy Tackett Jenna Kramer = Bobbie Toby Ling = Robbie Richard Ramsey = Marshall Monroe Kyrie Kennedy= ex-wife Kevin Lilly = Skippy Chris Cox = Mrs. Monroe Jeremy Kessler = Nick Hardy Also, in the planning stages is the Members Only trip for October. More details will be in the August issue of The Horizons for this fun trip to a nearby destination with great food. In addition, the second annual official Membership Drive community event will be Sept. 12 at the Strand Theater. There will be free entertainment and door prizes, so you won’t want to miss it. Bring a friend who is not yet a member! Thank you to those who have already renewed memberships. If you haven’t renewed, don’t delay. Send your renewal in now so you don’t miss any of the events!

The State Health Insurance Assistance Program, or SHIP, is a national program that offers one-on-one counseling and assistance to people with Medicare and their families. Through federal grants directed to states, SHIPs provide free counseling and assistance via telephone and face-to-face interactive sessions, public education presentations and programs, and media activities. To be contacted by a SHIP counselor, please call Shelby Senior Services, Inc., (317) 398-0127. Question: I have Medicare and health insurance through my current employer. When I go to the doctor, I am frequently asked which insurance is primary and which insurance is secondary. How do I know whether Medicare or my health insurance through my employer is primary?Answer: Whether Medicare or your insurance from a current employer is primary depends on the size of the employer and why you qualify for Medicare. Primary insurance pays first on a claim for medical or hospital care. Secondary insurance pays after primary insurance. It usually pays for all or some of the costs that the primary insurer did not cover. However, if the service was not initially covered by the primary insurance, the secondary insurer may not cover it as well. If you qualify for Medicare because you are 65 or older, your insurance from a current employer is primary and Medicare is secondary. If the company has 20 or more employees, then Medicare is the primary insurance, and your employer coverage is secondary. If you qualify for Medicare because you are under 65 and have a disability or have ALS, your insurance from a current employer is primary and Medicare is secondary. Bowling
